Prosper, Texas

Cotton was "King" in North Texas in the 1840's.  The reason was rich, black fertile soil.  Settlers first came to the prairie land for this good soil in 1846.  Many years later, in 1876, the County Courts initiated a quick sale of tracts of land that were each roughly 160 acres in size.  A gentleman from McKinney, Dr. A. T. Bryant, bought one of these tracts for $3.50 an acre.  That tract of land later became the heart of what is now the town of Prosper, Texas.  In 1902 the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad formed & made quite an impact on the area.  Two small communities - one north of Prosper & one south - were merged with the original tract of land thus forming the town of Prosper.  Community officials were the individuals responsible for applying for the name of any new city or town.  These requests were, of course, made to the Post Office.  The Prosper folks originally asked for the name "Richland," but they found that name was already taken.  When asked for an alternate name a gentleman by the name of J. C. Slaughter thought Prosper, Texas would be a good name, because the crops had been so prosperous that year.  Incorporated in 1914, Prosper, Texas had a population of 500, & believe it or not the first mayor, U. N. Clary, sat in that seat for 49 years.

With a current population of just over 5,000 residents, Prosper, Texas has always been a cute little town.  That seems to be just fine with the folks who live there - even some pretty famous folks who own property in this quaint community.  Liann Rymes, a well-known country singer, lives in Prosper, Texas.  You will also find that large parcels of land are owned by Bill Bates & Deion Sanders, both former Dallas Cowboys.

Just as the name implies, prospering is something this little town does well.  For more information you can visit the official City of  Prosper website.

Prosper, Texas has its own school district.  Just over 2,000 students attend 5 schools in this district - 3 elementary schools, 1 middle school, & 1 high school.  You can visit the Prosper ISD website for more information on their school system.
