A 'youngster" among most of the area's cities, the Town of Fairview, Texas, has a fuzzy (at best) history. Two small communities, one being Fairview & the other being Wetsel, came together to form what was the Town of Fairview at the time of incorporation. The community of Fairview was named in honor of a gentleman by the name of Colonel George Apple. Colonel Apple was the son of a Mr. Samuel "Sam" Apple. "Sam" & his wife Emma Apple moved their Pecan Grove Dairy to an area south of McKinney around 1921. Sam was said to have named the dairy for its pretty view. From the hilltop of the property he supposedly said he had a "fair view" toward McKinney. There are other versions of the name's origin, but by 1924 the dairy was renamed the Fairview Dairy. The community of Wetsel named for the Wetsel family, but no one is really sure if it was named after Henry Wetsel who head-righted land just south of McKinney or one of his sons - James, Peter Lewis, & David - who also had head-right properties in the area. In the Fairview Grocery on May 7, 1958, an election was held to determine the fate of the Town of Fairview. With 50 ballots cast, only two opposed the incorporation. An order was signed on May 12, 1958 by Judge Button. The Town of Fairview, Texas was officially incorporated as a town.
There are many stories - folklore, if you will - surrounding the history of the different happenings before & after the official incorporation of the Town of Fairview, Texas. Stories include such things as the loss of Mr. Henry Wetsel's arm in a terrible mill accident & his being the first such ever Bermuda grass lawn in the area. Another story explains the Fairview Dairy's name change to Apple Dairy, due to a confusion of checks for one going to another.
