Celina, Texas was named by a homesick pioneer. By 1876 many settlers had come from Tennessee & Kentucky to make a new life for themselves in what is now part of the northwest corner of Collin County. These folks formed a small community in the area that was to become the town of Celina, Texas. By 1879 the town was established, & by 1881 the town had its own post office. Now as the story goes, a gentleman by the name of John T. Mulkey was the first postmaster of Celina, Texas. He was a homesick Tennessee native, & Celina was the name of his hometown in Tennessee, so Celina, Texas seemed fitting. The year 1880 brought a church to Celina, & 1885 brought a drug store, a general store, & a mill. Many, many years later the Frisco railway was coming - excitement spread throughout the little town. Disappointment followed shortly thereafter as news spread that the railway was not coming close enough to little Celina, Texas. This potential setback did not stop these residents. The determined merchants suggested it would be a good idea to move the town TO the railroad, & that's exactly what they did. In February of 1902, buildings & homes were moved, & in 1907 "new" Celina was incorporated officially. With all the growth this little city seemed to be well on its way, & by 1937 there were more than 40 businesses, 10 churches & a very nice school built of brick. Things just seemed to come to a halt when Celina suffered several considerably destructive fires downtown. Respective to other cities in the area, growth has been slow, but Celina's value has definitely been realized. Much of the remaining land has tripled in price.
